The Importance of Retreating (Part 2)

By | Business Advice | No Comments

There isn’t much in this world that will stress me out more than a crazy busy schedule. When I say crazy busy, I don’t just mean there is something going on every day. No, I mean crazy busy schedule to the point that if you are more than 5 minutes off schedule the entire week may go awry. Sarah and I had a moment in November when trying to schedule a flood of meetings that had recently arrived in our inbox. As we were talking through the last of 12 meetings, we realized we were scheduling them more than 2 months in advance! I don’t know about you, but that was a wake up call for me: we were TOO busy.  Being busy is so much a part of not only my personality, but American culture, that it is almost impossible to avoid. So how do we fight it? Retreat,…

The Importance of Retreating (Part 1)

By | Business Advice | No Comments

A couple weekends ago the Grand Occasions ladies went on our second annual “Grand Retreat” and let us just say, it was exactly what these two wedding planners needed. Today we’re sharing a little bit of what we did and what we recommend for your own time of focus and reflection.     On Friday, December 2nd-5th the GO gals resided near the water in Spring Lake, Michigan and ventured into the perfect little Stars-Hollow-Like town of Grand Haven. I seriously can’t think of a time when Monica and I looked at each other and said, “Why are we doing this?” but I can remember a time or two (ok, maybe every-other day) when we look at each other and say, “HOW ARE WE DOING THIS?”   On any given day I can be found running around, coffee in hand, in one of my (most likely) 3 wardrobe changes of the day. If it was up to me, I would be working in my Grand Nook (the fabulous desk space in my room I’ve recently created – pics to come soon!), sipping my Costa Rican coffee, while networking with fellow wedding vendors, researching wedding trends, learning floral arranging, getting ahead on our social media, answering emails at normal times of the day, actually blogging at leisure, and the list goes on. As much as I love sitting here, blogging in my…

All That Glitters

We are pretty confident that behind every great business, there is an incredible graphic designer. Ours is Catherine. She’s absolutely everything, including our new best friend. Re-branding takes patience, ya’ll, especially when you’re dealing with two high-strung perfectionists like ourselves (three cheers for Cat, everyone!). When Monica and I started this adventure a little over a year ago, we had no idea what we were doing. Grand Occasions was a pipe dream on our notebooks in the back corner of Clique Coffee Bar. We were two twenty-somethings with crappy day jobs and empty bank accounts who wanted to do something great. I wanted creativity, she wanted organization, I dreamed of wedding colors and floral arrangements, she dreamed of timelines and spreadsheets. And, being the hopeless romantics that we are, we both dreamed about playing a vital role in happy couple’s love stories. So here we are, 13 months and 11 days…
